Governor Mark Dayton proclaims November 10, 2012 as Net Cancer Awareness Day

MINNEAPOLIS, MN OCTOBER 29, 2012:  Northwoods NETS is pleased to announce that Governor Mark Dayton has signed a proclamation naming November 10, 2012 as NET Cancer Awareness Day. Worldwide, November 10^th is recognized by patients, medical professionals and advocacy groups to raise awareness for this rare, complex and frequently misdiagnosed form of cancer. Tragically, pancreatic neuroendocrine cancer claimed the life of entrepreneur Steve Jobs in 2011.

Neuroendocrine tumors (NETS) often develop into cancer and, if left untreated, can result in serious illness and death. Healthcare professionals often underestimate the malignant and metastatic potential of neuroendocrine tumors and NET cancer patients are often misdiagnosed or receive a delay of diagnosis, which can have a negative impact on their chance of survival and quality of life. Survival for NET cancer patients is further compromised by fragmented care and lack of access to treatment by networks of specialists and although there have been advances in the detection and treatment of NET cancers, not all patients are benefiting quickly enough from scientific and medical progress in the field. With timely diagnosis and proper treatment, NET cancer patients have significantly improved outcomes and quality of life.
